Let us play a game called “What If.” In this game I speak of things and we both get to consider the value of them as if they were true.
What if there really is a purple cow who flies? What value would finding such an animal be? Yet, what serious value would there be in that cow? It would surely still be just a cow. And after a short time, the people would simply regard that cow as just a cow. The sensationalism would last a whole, what? Maybe a year? Life has far too many things going on to allow a purple cow to interrupt our lives for very long. Moms would begin to say, “yea yea. The cow…….”. Business would simply move on after a short while. People need certain things and the cow would take a back seat to the assembly line in rather short order (no pun intended). You still need to get to ……. done. Sleep comes on us sooner or later. And the cow is simply a weird creature of the day. Us weirdos (for isn’t the nature of man more weird than a purple cow?) would continue on our way will little mention of that animal within 2 years. There would be a lot of money change hands over that animal. But that’s about all it amounts to.
Another “What if”: What if someone would find a way to travel to the farthest star in the universe, gather a few samples, snap a few pictures from his heat resistant camera, and come back to earth. What value would there be in that? After a few short moments of time, his accomplishment would be reduced to valueless trivia. Earth holds enough demands on us to cause his great feat to be reduced to nothing over time. Just like the cow, soon enough, we would hear, “So what.”
And how about this “What if?” What if all the people of the earth were able to speak to each other without using external means? By using their minds they learned to speak with those minds. Our ears would no longer be useful, for everything could be understood by the mind. And so it would be for every other part of our bodies. What value would it be? We would be locked into a world of vile thoughts. Every man speaking to everyone else all the things we currently keep hidden behind our skin. Perhaps we would “hear” someone say, “I sure wish I had a piece of that star in my basement.” Or we are sure to hear a woman say, “I wish he were my husband! I would gladly get rid of this do nothing guy in a heart beat! Why, just look at how resourceful the star dude is!” So much for world peace.
Speaking of world peace, do you honestly believe you can cause the world to live in peace? Surely you’re not that stupid. Here, let’s consider that “what if.” What if the liberal thinkers (Those who peace-meal the truth) were able to bring about world peace? What would that look like? And how might it be accomplished? And how long can that possibly last? As soon as there appeared one man, or woman (remember star dude?), who wanted something someone else had, that peace would be shattered with escalating hatred, envy, war, murder, and chaos of every kind. No, this “what if” is kind of a useless striving. I would suggest that within 2 minutes there would be an outbreak of some kind of evil somewhere. You might achieve a two second peace in each time zone. But that’s all you’re gonna get. World peace is not very likely, so it’s a very valueless “What if”. But hey! Don’t get depressed! This is only a game. Or is it?
One more:
What if God really did see everything on earth and heaven as if in pure daylight? After all the Bible says that nothing is hidden from His sight. Yeah. What if? If you’re playing this game with me, I take it you are already aware of the implications of that “What If”. But have you left those implications somewhere and can’t seem to find them? Wow! This is an invention we could use: RonKo’s Implication Finder. But wait! There’s more! (Cool digression huh?)
Every thought laid bare, every action noticed, every word spoken is recorded forever, every attitude is stamped and written down. What you looked at is remembered, what you didn’t do (and should have) is noticed. The lack of your personal righteousness is blazingly apparent. And this is true of every man, woman, and child who has ever lived. Ok. This one has some interesting value. This one might even last a while, eternity perhaps?
Those who say there is no God, are being recorded even as they speak those words. Everyone who worships the things of this world is being marked as such. Everyone who calls on the name of Jesus, either with their lips or heart, is heard. For everything we do, say, and think is laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. And we will give account.
This “What If” holds a whole lot of water. Doesn’t it. If this is true, then nothing will diminish its power over men. If this is true, we are compelled to consider our ways. Unlike the cow or the communication thingy, star dust, or even world peace, this “What If” holds power over our very souls. This one reaches down into our inward parts, dividing between life from death 24/7. This “What If” is seriously worth considering. Because if it’s true, we’re all in very serious trouble. Thus the Gospel of Jesus, the Christ of God. What if?
What if you’re on the very edge of meeting the Holy God of heaven and earth? Your death is only a matter of time. It is coming at you fast, silent, and sure. What if He has already met you here? What if He has been watching you from the very first contact between sperm and egg? What then?
This “What If” is far more likely than anything else man can imagine. Bottom line folks: It is far more likely that God exists, then for any other invention of man’s mind to become eternally valuable (not to mention real). Since the odds are in His favor (as opposed to the imagination of man) then everything in the Bible is quite possibly true also. Why is it that we can imagine all kinds of trivial crap yet give no consideration to the validity of the Word of God? And if these things written are true, then our reluctance to read and practice them will stand against us more heavily than being crushed by an errant sky scraper. (Errant, because it’s suppose to stand up on its base. And you’re suppose to be able to walk up its steps, sit at your desk, and imagine all kinds of ridiculous garbage about life.) But in this analogy, it seems to be resting on your fragile lil bod.) And there will be absolutely no excuse, either given or received. Give it some thought.
