Lead On

I sat on a hill and watched a vast army pass by in the valley below.  The air was still.  It was easy to make out the words they spoke to each other.  They held court to construct laws between them as they marched along.  The justices were surrounded with runners.  And each judge’s runners ran through out the entire army to spread the news of new laws.  They were a people without any land.  Yet they marched as if they would conquer and defend their property from those they perceived as against them.  What joy they held as they marched along.  And if it weren’t for the folly of their plight, they would have inspired me.

Lead on!  Lead on!  March toward certain death in the bright Spring air.  What you plot will not come to pass.  What you desire cannot be.  You plot against the Holy One of Israel.  You desire to be rid of the One who created you and, even now, feeds you and gives you water.  The clouds are held back so that you might march in confidence.  Blind you are to the tens of thousands of Holy Angels rimming the hills about you.  Lead on and strengthen yourself for the battle to come.  There is One who will never submit to the law of man.  Yet man will surely submit to His law.

He sits patiently waiting for the place where they walk.  He has prepared a place to meet them.  Lead on.

From Snake to Lamb

I was a viper, squirming through this world seeking to devour something.

Fangs exposed, dripping with anticipation of the tasty morsels I might find.

Every thought was for my belly; eternally empty and waiting to be filled.

For a reason I can’t explain, a Man came to me and touched my head with a gentle glow of love in His eyes.

Now I am a lamb!

He moved me to a place where He tends over all my brothers.

The vipers are not welcome here.

The wolves prowl around the edge of the flock.

But He dispatches them from harmful intent toward His lambs.

I eat in peace and ponder His beautiful protection all day long.

Before I know I am thirsty, I am led to crystal clear water.

I had no limbs, but now I leap on legs like springs.

I had no beautiful sound to make; a hiss was all I knew.

Now I bleat with joy at the sound of His voice.

All my days are filled with pleasant thoughts because He had mercy to touch me.

Praise to the Lord, the Great Shepherd of the Sheep!

All praise and love to He who lives forever!

Amen.
