The Knowing

The cop tried to “just drive”.  Two miles to the station left to go.  The creature in the back seat had filled his ears with every vile word.  He had listened to pleadings, excuses, promises, and psycho babble for 20 minutes.  But the next line was going to force the cop to speak at the creature.

“You know what it’s like, when you want something so bad that you dont care who suffers as you reach out to get it.  We’re the same, you and I”.

Anger?  Is that what he felt when he heard the creature say that?   No, not anger.  It was simply a coldness; a sort of deaf ear and uncaring heart.

The words he spoke to the creature came from deep in the cop’s heart.   They were true and deeply sincere. “I don’t know you, where you come from, or where you are going.  I’ve never been where you have and I’ll never be where you’re going.  In less than 5 minutes you’ll be completely forgotten.   We’re not anything like ‘the same'”.  At that, the creature shut up.

From the book of Luke chapter 13:

23 Someone asked him, “Lord, are only a few people going to be saved?” He said to them, 24 “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door, because many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able to. 25 Once the owner of the house gets up and closes the door, you will stand outside knocking and pleading, ‘Sir, open the door for us.’ “But he will answer, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from.’ 26 “Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’ 27 “But he will reply, ‘I don’t know you or where you come from. Away from me, all you evildoers!’ 28 “There will be weeping there, and gnashing of teeth, when you see Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God, but you yourselves thrown out. 29 People will come from east and west and north and south, and will take their places at the feast in the kingdom of God. 30 Indeed there are those who are last who will be first, and first who will be last.”
