In a world of boneless people two gelatinous blobs decided to help one another. They wiggled and jiggled and rolled until they were side by side. Then they began to help each other.
Since they had no bones they could not lift their arms. Their fingers were but tiny flaps of skin. But they did have eyes and mouths. And with these they spent their days helping one another.
One day the Lord Jesus passed by. Their love for one another touched him. He stood near them until they went to sleep that night. With his heart full of caring he gave the men bones in their arms and hands.
When the men awoke they were delighted with their new ability. They scratched what itches they could reach. And they found themselves so much more capable of taking care of one another. By reaching out and pulling or pushing they could move from one place to another. And so, full of joy, they gave thanks to God and fell asleep at the end of the first day.
That night the Lord Jesus came by again. He saw how they had taken care of one another with their newfound strength. He took note that they had put salve on each other’s bed sores, and moved some of the obstacles that had prevented their comfort. Their efforts together pleased Him, so he gave them bones in their body. But the Lord withheld the bones for their legs and feet.
The Sun rose upon the friends and found them sitting up. With their newfound perch their eyes could see farther than before. They spent the day again helping one another and speaking of the beauty that had surrounded them. Finally, with many tasks accomplished, and a lengthy prayer of thanks, the pair fell asleep for the night.
By wise design the Lord stayed away from the pair for 7 days. When he came near them it was at the close of the 7th day and he found them sleeping. He walked about their encampment and was amazed at their ingenuity.
A table has been built for two. 2 beds held the sleeping friends. A tiny cabin surrounded them. A fire pit was framed by two chairs. And the door to their tiny cabin was wide enough to allow two men to pass through at the same time.
The Lord was greatly pleased. He had purposed to wait for 7 days to see how these men would use their newfound gift. To his joy they had done as was required for they had turned their gifts toward helping one another.
With a beaming smile and soft teary eyes the Lord touch them and gave them bones in their legs and feet. Then very softly he lowered his head between the two men and whispered, “Hear me my friends. Sleep while you listen. Because you have discarded selfishness, I love you. And now I will give you a token of my love. See, I have given you legs so that together you might go about and teach others the way that you have learned.” With that the Lord kissed them and went on his way.
When the pair awoke they were full of joy and gave great thanks to God. They spent the rest of their lives teaching others how to be selfless. And the Lord came behind granting bones here and there.
