A Letter to Freedom Lovers

You have petitioned for freedom.  How tirelessly you have worked to gain what you are not to have.

College

Jet Skis

Wide Screen TVs

Marvelous luxury in cars, houses, prestige, wine, liquor, beer.

Sports

Vacations

Happy family reunions in exotic places

Innovation upon innovation, medicine, electronics, gadgets of various kinds.

Sunday strolls with loved ones

Tolerance for every thought, expression, lie, or truth.

In short, you have petitioned for freedom to increase the work of your hands.  The regard for Holiness, godliness, suffering that you might learn obedience, reverence for everything Jesus, and locked down defense of God’s Gospel, have not been the central part of your petition.  Do you honestly think, with regard to the things mentioned above that God is slightly interested in allowing this generation to gain what they should not have?

All the while: Billions of His holy people have arrived in His presence void of the pleasures of this world.  They stand praising His Glory and waiting for the culmination of His work in the Saints still struggling today.  Through the Lord’s eyes: His word has been cast among us and billions have listened to the point of “Doing”.  Where is the “Doing” among those who strive to be free to seek all forms of pleasure?

All America poses along the fence of “tomorrow” waiting to see what will be granted to them.  “Freedom is coming”, they say with expectant eyes.  We will gain what we want by vote.  But the Holy Will of God is ignored among them.  Does a student gain a favorable grade by not completing the tasks the teacher grades her students by?  What is highly valued among men is abhorrent in the sight of God.  Likewise, what is highly valued in God’s sight, is abhorrent to seekers of pleasurable freedom.

The Eunuchs of Heart

To be made a eunuch of heart, in a sea of immorality.  What a wonderful gift is given to those who press their souls against the glass floor of heaven.  While men all around worship the visage of woman; pressing their heart toward desire and admiration of decaying flesh.  God’s men are blessed to inhabit far loftier places.

Each body we encounter becomes a soul.  The eyes of the Spirit do not see the outward adornment as primary.  Instead, they perceive the companionship of testing which attends all people.  Slaves to Righteousness, they walk unhindered by the lust of the flesh.  Set free to inhabit that far loftier place of Life, they are a blazing fire in the night to weary travelers.  They are a warming glow of fire to frost-bitten souls.

All Glory to God the Father through Jesus His Christ for the release from bonds born of flesh.   Given is the freedom to walk according to His commands.  Purified in heart far beyond the limitations of man, these blessed ones perceive the truth without error.  They will not be ashamed on the day they see His face.  For He has set them free by the Holy Spirit of Life.

To live in this Spirit of Life is to Live in Christ Jesus our Lord, Master, Friend, and Love.  Such strength displayed against the lust of the body is the same strength which the holy Martyrs displayed under all kinds of torment.  The smiling countenance they showed during those trials.  The songs they sung while their flesh was taken from them.  The praises for the God who saves were in abundance.  And the love of tormentors through forgiveness and encouragement, still rages in the soul of those purchased through the power of God to impart Life.

Come taste and see; The Lord is Good!  There is eternity even here in this black and twisted “place of testing.”  This testimony is true.  And all who partake of eternity, through the Holy Spirit of God’s sending, will testify the same answer.  “There is a purity among God’s people that the world knows nothing about.”  We are not simply commanded to restrain the desires which rage within us.  We are also given the Perfect strength to desire and perform obedience.  His people come to expect obedience as much as we can expect a wicked man to do what is wicked.  What does it mean when it is said, “They have washed their robes in the Blood of the Lamb?”

Make no mistake regarding religion.  “He who does what is right is righteous.”  And this not of ourselves, it is a gift of God lest any man should boast.  Only come and taste what He offers to everyone who will dare to believe unto righteousness.

No longer does belief remain speculation.  There is a faith which turns to a Knowing.  Seek it out!  Prove this testimony.  You will not be disappointed who seek after this truth with all your heart, mind, strength and soul.  He will meet you where you stand, regardless the stench of your ways.  And He will fill you with that strength of Life which you lack so very much of now.

It is through this filling that we become so very much more than men.  Restraint is not the answer, though it is proof of a present and good desire.  Transformation is the superior key.  And this is what He has promised to all who rest in Him.  We, who belong to Him, testify that God cannot lie!  How else is it said, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled?”

By His Grace.

To the Walls!

God’s wrath will certainly come upon the wicked of any age.  And there is a purification due all His people.  We read this: “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.” (1 Timothy 3: 12)

These are two points worthy of consideration; that the wicked will suffer under the hand of the Most High God, and that God will purify His people.  I find it interesting that the wicked mock their prophesied suffering, and that many “Christians” ignore the promise of purification.  Rest assured, both are imminent!

Please, my siblings in Christ, consider our state of affairs today.  We enjoy a certain freedom to love God openly.  But we are not guaranteed that this will remain the case.  I do not pretend to know the mind of God regarding the things that will soon appear.  But by the testimony of our brothers and sisters who went before us we see that they were not held exempt from suffering for the name of the Lord Jesus.  Though this turned out to be a blessing to them, fearsome acts were sent against them.

We do not live in a place void of suffering.  And let us not forget what we have been told:

“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
6 because the Lord disciplines the one he loves,
and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.” (Hebrews 12)

Let us not consider that we will be held exempt from suffering simply because we live among masses of men who keep their life of ease.  God is not blind to our situation.  And He is not a man that He should take certain pity in the way of worldly ease.  If this place was built to test the Son of God through suffering, how do we think we will fair?

About 4 years ago, when the Lord had come to again pick me up from horrible suffering, a saying came to me in the midst of prayer.  This saying holds a special urgency today, as it has for every generation of God’s people.  “To the walls!”  Let us climb to the top of our perceived fortifications and listen for the approach of what will certainly come upon us all.  Let us prepare to open the gates for the Sovereign One.

By His Grace.

I have considered how to relate this soul shaking account which Eusebius of Caesarea gives us.  But there is no way to do it here except that I copy the text and let you read it for yourself.  See if this doesn’t seem to have implication to our own day.

This instance is taken from the 8th book of his work.

1. It is beyond our ability to describe in a suitable manner the extent and nature of the glory and freedom with which the word of piety toward the God of the universe, proclaimed to the world through Christ, was honored among all men, both Greeks and barbarians, before the persecution in our day.

2. The favor shown our people by the rulers might be adduced as evidence; as they committed to them the government of provinces, and on account of the great friendship which they entertained toward their doctrine, released them from anxiety in regard to sacrificing.

3. Why need I speak of those in the royal palaces, and of the rulers over all, who allowed the members of their households, wives and children and servants, to speak openly before them for the Divine word and life, and suffered them almost to boast of the freedom of their faith?

4. Indeed they esteemed them highly, and preferred them to their fellow-servants. Such an one was that Dorotheus, the most devoted and faithful to them of all, and on this account especially honored by them among those who held the most honorable offices and governments. With him was the celebrated Gorgonius, and as many as had been esteemed worthy of the same distinction on account of the word of God.

5. And one could see the rulers in every church accorded the greatest favor by all officers and governors. But how can any one describe those vast assemblies, and the multitude that crowded together in every city, and the famous gatherings in the houses of prayer; on whose account not being satisfied with the ancient buildings they erected from the foundation large churches in all the cities?

6. No envy hindered the progress of these affairs which advanced gradually, and grew and increased day by day. Nor could any evil demon slander them or hinder them through human counsels, so long as the divine and heavenly hand watched over and guarded his own people as worthy.

7. But when on account of the abundant freedom, we fell into laxity and sloth, and envied and reviled each other, and were almost, as it were, taking up arms against one another, rulers assailing rulers with words like spears, and people forming parties against people, and monstrous hypocrisy and dissimulation rising to the greatest height of wickedness, the divine judgment with forbearance, as is its pleasure, while the multitudes yet continued to assemble, gently and moderately harassed the episcopacy.

8. This persecution began with the brethren in the army. But as if without sensibility, we were not eager to make the Deity favorable and propitious; and some, like atheists, thought that our affairs were unheeded and ungoverned; and thus we added one wickedness to another. And those esteemed our shepherds, casting aside the bond of piety, were excited to conflicts with one another, and did nothing else than heap up strifes and threats and jealousy and enmity and hatred toward each other, like tyrants eagerly endeavoring to assert their power. Then, truly, according to the word of Jeremiah, “The Lord in his wrath darkened the daughter of Zion, and cast down the glory of Israel from heaven to earth, and remembered not his foot-stool in the day of his anger. The Lord also overwhelmed all the beautiful things of Israel, and threw down all his strongholds.” [Lamentations 2:1-2]

9. And according to what was foretold in the Psalms: “He has made void the covenant of his servant, and profaned his sanctuary to the earth,–in the destruction of the churches,–and has thrown down all his strongholds, and has made his fortresses cowardice. All that pass by have plundered the multitude of the people; and he has become besides a reproach to his neighbors. For he has exalted the right hand of his enemies, and has turned back the help of his sword, and has not taken his part in the war. But he has deprived him of purification, and has cast his throne to the ground. He has shortened the days of his time, and besides all, has poured out shame upon him.”

Of Blessed Understanding We Join the Athletes of the Beginning.

The Lord has blessed my heart by bringing an audio file to me.  He is more gracious than we can possibly know.  If all His people were to combine their testimony regarding the Glory of the Lord Jesus (and that to the Glory of the Father) all the melody of sound would still fall short of His eternal beauty.  So I thank you Lord Jesus for Your precious blessings that filter to us through our time in this place of testing.  May all Your people present great glories to You on the day You are revealed in Glory to all men!  Amen!

The audio file is that of Eusebius’ Church History.  The work spans the time from the beginning of the Church to about the year 350 or so.  Up to the end of his account the Church had weathered a few problems within.  But the account tells us that the Lord’s people were blessed to pretty much remain constant in their worship, brotherhood, and display of righteousness.

I suspect that as I finish this “listening” I will search out another work which deals with the subsequent years.  I fear those works that will follow, however.  For it isn’t long in Church history when we find compromise between Church and State.  The results of which attack the Lord’s people from a particularly tender perspective.

How my soul wants to encourage my brothers and sisters to regain, retain, and revitalize our purity and love for the Lord.  But I am at a loss this evening.  Perhaps the Lord will bless us all by words fitting to the surge of dedication this work of Eusebius has inspired.

Shades of persecution have come and gone.  Yet today seems the most hideous of all.  Silent compromise seeps into the very foundations of our identity as “sons of God”.  For the most part the Church has become useless and loved by the world, especially in America.  Each man and woman goes after their own tasks unscathed by physical or financial malnutrition.

One thought runs through my blood tonite, however.  A rather foreboding thought presses against my skin from the inside out.  Is the Church today ready if the impiant (as they were prone to refer to wicked men) one regains his footing against us as he did in the first 1000 years of the Church?  This question is not for me to either answer or speculate about.  It is, perhaps, for us to prove individually as what will be enters the calendar year of its own time.

One possible answer to that question is this:  Prepare in prayer, Truth, righteousness, purity, holiness, bodily control, and consumption of the Word, lest that day (if it indeed comes upon us) encamp around us from the very fringes of the woods which create our present clearing of “peace”.

Watch with all hope.  Hope with eyes that are not of man.  And stretch out the wings of “The Faith” as far as they will stretch.  Get ready to fly by the strength of the Holy Spirit, regardless the necessity.  Only then can we walk toward what comes with the great peace displayed by the millions who have worked in the heat of the day.

By His Grace.
