“So. . . Ya Wanna Be Well Huh?

Vase

“Do you want to be well?”  The answer was blame.  “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred.”  The answer is clearly disconnected from the question.  But which one of us can point a finger at that man and accuse him?  Jesus healed him regardless his willingness to have a vibrant conversation.  If the man had understood who he was talking to I’m sure there would have been a whole lot more words than something stupid like casting blame.  He was talking face to face with the One who made him.

Someone has told you about the Gospel.  You heard of how you’re supposed to be free from sin.  But you find yourself reverting back and back again to the same old ways.  Now you’re lost in a fog of doubt.   “Maybe this Jesus thing doesn’t work because it can’t.  Maybe I’m too stubborn.  Maybe He can’t love me because of the things that plague my heart.”

The example above isn’t really fair in this context.  It’s not your legs that are paralyzed.  It’s your attitude and willingness to do what is pure and right, isn’t it.  To be fair to you, I’ll say this:  You don’t even know why you do what you do.  It’s just something you’ve become accustomed to doing when you’re stressed.  And let’s be real here.  You’re stressed all the time.  So you blame anything for your lack of desire and dedication to serve God with clean hands and a pure heart.  That isn’t a slam up against your head, my friend.  It’s the truth of slavery to sin.

In our slavery to the things we shouldn’t do we can’t even put our finger out and point to the real reason why.  So we wave our hand broadly and say, “It’s because of all those things.”  If that is true, then you’re helplessly lost and destined for destruction.  And that seems to be enough for you.  Somehow your plight is pushed out-of-the-way because you simply can’t do what’s right.  You simply CAN’T.  Good lie, but even you can see right through it.

You haven’t given up totally, however.  That vase of hope still sits on the corner table near the door.  And you tend to glance at it often enough to remember.  It gathers a dust of neglect.  Yet that is enough for you?  That’s not true and you know it.  Hopelessly you sit in the living room of your mind and gaze at that once beautiful treasure.  You grew tired of picking it up and examining its beauty.  So you put it near the door.  I notice you didn’t stick it away in the basement.

I have something for you.  How long ago was it when you sat on that couch and held that precious promise?  What has happened in the mean time?  Didn’t you grow up a bit more?  Haven’t you learned a few things about life you didn’t know when you last held “hope”?  What if you were to go get that gorgeous thing.  Dust it off.  And just go sit with it for a while.  You don’t have to reach in, wet your finger with the oil, and put it on your lips.  Just sit there and be silent with it for a while.

Now, while you’re sitting there, ponder what has happened to you since you last found yourself in this position.  Look hard for the things you learned.  Try not to look at the wickedness you embraced.  Just look at how you’ve learned to cope with certain issues.  In other words, look for success.  Strive to find the tiniest threads of “win”.  You have those because you had put that vase on a table right next to the door of your heart.  Every time you came in or went out you passed it by.  And your mind noticed.

The “great winning” doesn’t just fall on us.  It comes to us by a series of tiny “wins”.  Win once.  Then quickly gather yourself to cause another win.  Then do it again in rapid fire.  That’s what causes the “great winning”.  We overcome our folly by making it a habit of doing what’s right.  That’s what is in that vase my friend.  Even if you poured the entire contents on your head it would still result in a singular win.  And you know that’s not enough.

Stop looking to gain the great prize of righteousness in one fell swoop.  Start forcing yourself to learn to win in tiny things.  And do these in rapid fire.  I say “forcing” because you and I both know we don’t really want to be well.  We just think we do.

Is it time to do the dishes?  Then get your ragged butt up and go do them.  Is it time to do the laundry?  Then get up and walk to the washer.  Do you want to learn about something?  Then go look for resources.  Did the thought cross your mind to go pray?  Then get off your duff and find a place quiet to kneel!  You don’t have to say much.  Just go!  The next time you “hear” that urging, do it again!  This is how to gain that “Great Win”.  And you’ve known it all along.

Stop blaming and start walking.  He healed your noodle legs by leaving that vase of hope with you.  You were smart enough to put it in a place where you’d pass it often enough to notice it.  See, it’s not what’s in the vase that causes you hope.  It’s the very fact that you know about Him.

It is quite possible that the man healed, so that he could walk, went away and played like he couldn’t walk anyway.  He might have even come back to the pool and just lay down.  He missed the way people cared for him.  And he allowed himself to live a lie like you and I do.  Well, it’s possible isn’t it?  It’s your life.  It’s your responsibility to do what is right.  Dishes, laundry, learning, and prayer don’t get themselves done.  It takes an attitude change.  It’s your attitude.  Change it or don’t.  It’s your choice.

Now, this post wouldn’t be complete without these things:

This “winning” applies to all aspects of the Gospel.  Immorality – just don’t do it.  Lies – shut your mouth.  Stealing – keep your grubby hands off it.  Speeding – lift your foot off the gas.  Arriving on time – leave.  Forgiveness – offer it and do it.  Saving money – don’t spend it.  Giving to charity – hand over the cash.  You see how hard it’s not?  Just because I didn’t mention your particular sin here doesn’t mean the “just do it” doesn’t apply.

Every aspect of the Gospel comes down to a singular choice all day long every day and every year.  If you’ve asked the Son of God to become your Lord, then you’ve been set free from the necessity and stupor of sin.  The choice is ours individually.  How do you get to a holy life?  One action at a time is the path.  Inaction is to refuse to do what is right.  If you want eternal life, then go do what is right to do now.  Hope will come to live in you as you obey.  Begin with the tiny things.  Learn to do them on a consistent basis.  Then the larger things will appear much smaller.  It’s kind of like making a mole hill out of a mountain, one handful of dirt at a time.  You might not finish reducing that mountain of sin in this life.  But make sure you get caught trying.

Thank you, to all who have subscribed to this blog.

If this blog has been a help or inspiration please don’t forget to pass on the url.  Millions haven’t even heard the Gospel yet.  Perhaps your sharing will lead to one less.  All I want in this life is to share the Gospel.  But gaining a voice in the world requires some serious help.  I’m hoping we can enter the minds of those not yet infected with the Truth.

Again, thank you.

To my fellow humans:

I have had many a word with those who want to argue against the Gospel in various aspects.  I want to reassure them that their arguments have been and are heard.  They think their arguments are between humans.  But I know the One who listened to the arguments they purport long before their lips spoke them.

I just wanted to put them at ease here.  Your complaints are registered in your personal name at the throne of the Most High God.  If you want mercy for what you’ve said, I suggest that you appeal to Jesus.  If you don’t care now, I understand.  And so does God.  He will ask you plainly what you meant by what you said and thought.  And He will certainly take into consideration how you taught your arguments to others (especially children).

So don’t worry about how I listened to you.  You might have walked away from a conversation with me thinking that I was angry with you.  That’s absolutely not so.  I simply spoke the truth as I read it in the Bible.  You are no offence to me at all.  Even now, I can’t remember any specific argument with anyone about the ways of God.  Oh, there’s a general sense left within me that many hate what the Bible has to say.  And by that hatred I am on their short list of people they would least like to carpool to work with.  Got it.

Have a nice day folks.

A Song of Truth to Martin Bashir

I saw a quote from a “news guy” (Martin Bashir) regarding the Catholic leader’s denial of a law which forces them to aid their workers in gaining birth control.  The statement he made was something like this, “That’s not being very Christian.”  There are no more stupid words a man might string together.  And this article is presented to show why his words are abject stupidity.

The man showed his complete lack of understanding regarding Christianity.  And he opened his heart to show us how rebellious he is toward the Holy God of Israel in Jesus the Christ.  And he displayed his choice to obey man rather than God.  What makes his statement stupid are the things he knows nothing about.  Maybe someone will make sure a copy of this reaches him so that he might give account of himself.

To this man, being Christian means we must give regardless of God’s commands to respect what He has given us.  To this man, Christians are hypocrites because they won’t help a woman to regulate the outcomes of sexual intercourse.  In short, this man thinks Christians should allow all women to play God when it comes to the function of their bodies.  And he is mystified that we should stand against the sins of this wicked day in the world’s history.  He might as well have said this:  “How dare you tell us we can’t use you to complete our desires!”  Well, we DARE!

There has been enough compromise from Christianity!  The Gospel has been watered down enough!  It is time to either, take a stand and begin to speak out loudly against this wicked age, or it is time to get up from your seat before Jesus, close the doors of your worship centers, and walk away from the truth He calls us all to embody.  I choose to remain with our Lord and God Jesus.  I will gladly take a strong stand and say the following.

Such women tell God that they are the ones in charge.  They say to Him that they will have sex any time they please.  And it is none of His business what happens as a result.  careers are to be made, sex is to be had, drinking is to be indulged, drugs, prostitution, gambling, greed, pride, and every wickedness abounds.  And I will take a stand against them all.

This man thinks we should aid them in this rebellion?  Was this the way of women from ages past?  Before birth control was available, did the women stab themselves in the stomach to abort their children?  When they were born did they throw them into the fire or water?  No, they had much more respect for what their bodies were capable of doing.  And if one did such things she was not glorified in society.   And unlike this man, the men of all other ages had more respect for their women.  Restraint was used instead of drugs.  Self discipline, an all but forgotten tool, was used with respect for the obvious outcome.

It is this age of abject rebellion which men and women take their stand against the Most High God.  They continue to contrive every possible means to gain what they want without regard to what God has commanded.  They consider that they live to please themselves, even at the expense of souls given to them in their womb.  They have thrown away self-control for the sake of pleasure. And they have come to expect that this seeking of pleasure will be allowed them regardless who is bold enough to stand in their way.  They do not consider that God gives life (a soul) at the union of sperm and egg.  The conception of life within them is simply a bother.  And they will not have it.

Even now there will be people read this and think I am being too harsh.  It is you who are being too harsh!  You are the ones killing the will of God among you so that you can do as you please!  You are the ones who are misusing the gifts of your bodies for the sake of your own gain.  I cannot be harsh enough about this topic.  God Himself will testify strongly about this on the day we all stand before Him.  And my words can never match the authority of the Most High God.

If that man who said, “That’s not being very Christian” would lower himself to read this message he would see that we have no intention of being the kind of Christians he thinks we should be.  To be as he suggests is to be no Christian at all!  We are saved by the ultimate authority in the ways of men and Angels.  Our obedience and allegiance is to God in Jesus, the creator of all that is, alone.  But then this man does not respect the authority of God, does he?  To him, Christianity is simply a religion which tells its followers to “be nice”.   What he doesn’t realize, and neither do those who rally with him, is that this message I’ve just presented is being nice.  I was nice enough to tell the truth.  I am being bold enough to incur the wrath of every rebellious man and woman.

I too walked as these people are doing.  I chased after every pleasure without thought to the consequences.  At some point the Gospel was presented to me, and I believed what it said.  With trembling heart I approached the Lord to confess what I was doing.  He has responded with a great mercy to lift me from those things.  He is quite willing and able to do the same for all who call out to him with a truthful heart.  I do not condemn you for what you are doing.  You are condemning yourself.  The judgment is already passed on all who chase after rebellion.  A second death awaits you after you die in this body.  And the judgment has already been rendered carte blanc.

This letter is a warning of two things:  The first warning is that all rebellion will bring swift destruction on anyone who embraces it.  And the second warning is that Christianity is not a “be nice” religion.  Regardless how you perceive the authority of Christians to tell you what is true, God remains King of all Truth and Righteousness.  He will judge us all according to our willingness to obey His commands.

You think because He is silent for now that He does not see what you do.  You purposely dismiss the fact that you will give account of yourself to Him.  And you believe all the lies of your brothers and sisters of sin to chase after every pleasure.  For now you take your side against the Living God.  But that need not remain the case for you.

The Apostle Paul said that “In Him we live and move and have our being.”  Consider this truth:  Allow someone to put an ant on your skin as your eyes are closed.  You will certainly feel what is foreign to your body.  It is the same with sin to God.  Every act of disobedience is felt and observed.  Nothing is hidden before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.

Turn to Him with earnest and fearful heart.  Confess what you have allowed yourself to become.  I assure you, He will lift you from all this rebellion in due time.  When He sees how we push away from sin to seek His ways, He responds with the gift He has promised.  This is the Gospel, my friend who thinks we should give in to every whim of sin you can imagine.  It is a message of hope to those who are already counted as dead before the Holy Throne of God.  It is not a license to continue in rebellion and every possible sin.  He will teach you to refrain from chasing after the things you now do which will cause your destruction.  And Jesus is able to teach you how to become clean, without fault, and holy.  He is able to turn you from an enemy of God to that which pleases His Father.

Eternal life is given to those who overcome.  What is it that we overcome which pleases God the Father through Jesus?  It is a life lived sinless that pleases God.  And Jesus is quite able to guide you into that very life.  I have spoken to the truth to all men and women.  This is the truth He has given to man in the Gospel of Christianity.  Make no mistake, It is “being very nice” to warn others of what is certainly going to come about by rebellious behavior.  It is to be eternally violent toward you to keep this message to ourselves!  So by asking us to help you remain in rebellion, you are actually asking us to be violent to you.  This is why that man’s statement is so incredibly stupid.

If you heard of a plot to murder a friend of yours wouldn’t you try to warn him?  If you knew that men were waiting to kill him as he went to his favorite bar, wouldn’t you try to keep him from going?  This is what I am doing for you.  I consider you my friends.  Because we are in the same position in this place of testing (the place God has made to create men and test their hearts to see if they will obey Him even without proof of His existence; do we love what is true or allow ourselves to misuse what He has provided).

And I am telling you that God has plotted against all wickedness, rebellion, selfishness, and sin.  God has sworn by Himself that nothing unclean will ever enter His presence.  He will catch you as you leave this body you now inhabit.  And you will be utterly destroyed!   The Holy Spirit of God, which helps me write this to you, will not contend with the wickedness of man forever.  There is a place where separation will be made.

Now what if your friend is so dead set on going to the bar that he pushes you away and rails on you for keeping him from his pleasure? With hatred for you in his heart he slams the door as he leaves.  What will you do next?  Do you still think I hate you because I try to keep you from death?  Do you really think I am being too harsh?  Think about it.

To the Woodshed We Go.

It is no light matter to expose our own faults.  But it is our duty to display the entirety of the Gospel within us.  It is one thing to say that the Lord can save us from sin and present us to His Father clean and without blemish.  It is an entirely different matter to display what that cleansing looks like as we walk with the Lord every day.

His people encounter the same ugly world as the non-believer.  And we stumble around sometimes just like they do.  The difference is that He holds us to account of our ways.  The things we do which displease His Father will be dealt with appropriately.  This is the side of Christianity the world knows little to nothing about.  Perhaps, just perhaps, if we displayed our travails more often the world would be set on ear as they criticize us.

In the Blink of an Eye

Regardless whether you believe it or not there is a place where you will give full (I mean full and involuntary.) testimony about what you have done in this body He has given you as a test of your heart.  The Lord once showed me how quick and permanent this testimony is.  He approaches you unseen.  And in less than a blink of an eye you know what He has found within you.  It is quicker than anything you have ever known.  And the concluding judgment is made by the One who is the final authority over all heaven and earth.  Though you deny what He finds He will simply retain His own judgment of you.  Your denial will accomplish nothing in your defense.

You will leave this body soon.  And you will be a soul who will appear before the Lord Jesus.  What will you say for yourself?  Will you dare say that you simply couldn’t curb the natural instincts?  If that’s your plan you know nothing about what the Gospel offers.  Look into it my friend.  The message of God through Jesus has the power to set you free from the things that will surely destroy you.  It is not religion.  It is true freedom to do what is good and right and just; to stop sinning!  No one who listens to Him will return to sin.  And this steadfast heart, that He will give you, will set you free from the condemnation you now face with a certainty.  No man can tame the body by himself.  Without Jesus you are locked in the perception of the body.  With him, however, your perception becomes as God sees the world.  This perception is a gift from God to all who call out to His Son in faith.

I have spoken here from God’s perspective.  Do you hate what I have said?  Do you find yourself doubting that you can lead a sinless life?  It is because you are locked in the perception of the body.  If you had been set free by the Lord you would have had an entirely different response to this message.  This perception I’m talking about is called living by the power of the Holy Spirit.

As we live by this Heaven born perception we are living by His Holy Spirit.  This gift of perception is the very power to be free from sin.  How can you listen to what has not been given to you?  How will you fight the sinful nature that you are, without being able to perceive what it does?  Enter into Jesus and He will show you clearly what the sinful nature (that is the body) is doing.  And He will set you free to choose what is good, right, acceptable to God, and eternal.

As you learn to love Him, you will learn to hate what He hates.  Come on now.  You have only a few years to live in this body before you are to give account of yourself (and that in less than the blink of an eye).  If you accept what He offers now you will never die.  If you refuse to listen to this message, you will certainly die.   As the Bible says, “He who is righteous does what is right.”  Come to Him in prayer and begin the journey into what is right, good and eternal.  Why would you die?
