Reality

Side with one political group, you’ll be happy for a little while.

Gather certain friends around you, they’ll give you comfort for a little while.

Bank on staying young all your life, you’ll be delusional for a few years.

Things change.  Disappointments come.  The next guy gets his chance to be happy for a little while.

Happiness in this world is like a crazy Bluejay.  He flies from one branch to another, blessing the place he stays for a little while.  But then he gets hungry for something “other”.  The branch where he was, springs back to its original position; empty and waiting for another bird.

But in Jesus, you’ll find the potential to be at peace forever.  The winds of change can’t destroy his faithfulness.   And those who place their full trust in him are never put to shame or brought to ruin.

It all depends on what you want, doesn’t it.  You want all the temporary chaos?  Graced by occasional happiness, like icing on a muffin.    Or are you looking for something endlessly permanent.

Don’t just, “try Jesus”.  Put all your trust in him and you’ll see that what I’m saying is true.

You always have the option to fail and be miserable; you can always go back to living a useless life.    You will not always have the option to take the beautiful life he offers so freely.

Think about it.

The Fire of Reality

Are people supposed to be happy?  Then why is there such an onslaught of sadness about us?  Explain that.

Is pleasure the purpose of life?  Or is it simply a means of escape from a forced reality check?

If we let ourselves be happy, does that take away death, sickness, disappointment, and the like?

If we wrap our days in pleasure, does that lessen reality?

Blessed is the one who finds the will to enter the fire of reality and remain there.

BA BA BA BIG! (Trouble)

Has anyone else noticed the size of shopping mall buildings and movie theaters?  They are absolutely gigantic.

When did that happen?  When did it become popular to put merchandise into buildings 10 times too big?

I do remember the tiny little stores when I was a child.  But even then, if you went to the big city, you could go to Woolworths five and dime.  And Sears was no small pickens.

When it happened I guess it’s not really that important.  But the fact that stores are larger than church buildings sort of gives me a startle.  I guess it just proves what’s important in America.

Just for fun I’ll share thought.

Imagine if every piece of merchandise was taken out of every large store in America, taken to some remote place, and heaped up in a mound.  Does anybody have any idea how big that mound would be?  I would guess it wouldn’t be fair to call it a mound.  A mountain is more like it.

You could call it idolatry.  You could refer to it as a manifestation of greed.  And if you singled out all the products, I suppose every commandment of God would be broken.  But what good would it do to accuse humanity of something they will never let go of?

But I’m pretty sure this wasn’t God intent when he made Adam and Eve.  Maybe a guy might own a broom, an axe and a shovel.  A knife and hammer would be pretty handy.  The guy might own a bed and a table and chairs.  And all the fixings for farming should be included.  But what about all the other stuff?

Still man has made his temples.  He’s pretty proud of what he’s done.  And no amount of words is gonna to take it away.

The people are happy.  The rich business owners are happy.  Industry is happy.  And every form of wickedness is happy.  (And it wouldn’t be fair to the world to leave out Christian merchandise.)  0k.  So even the Christians are happy.  Hmmm.

Wow!  We’re all just one big happy family.  The only one that’s a bit disgruntled is God.  But he doesn’t seem to matter much in the larger scheme of things, does he?

Now ain’t that just something to ponder?

Just be happy!

I see people celebrate situations in life.  I am told I should be happy for them.   And I know that often people are irritated that they must remind me to be happy for others.

Should I lie and say I am happy because you bought a new car?   Should I lie and say I am happy that you have a new boyfriend?  Should I lie and say I am pleased that you are near retirement and I know you will have a good time?  Should I lie about the hundreds of things people experience in this world?

Where has the joy of the Lord been, as we celebrate life?  Where has the celebration been because we share the joy of salvation together?  Where has been the delight in God’s law between us?  It was never good and pleasant between us as we climbed the steps to his temple.  How can I be pleased for you in the things of this world when you are not busily acquiring the things of Eternity?

I fear you will die being perfectly pleased with your life on this earth.  They will all speak well of you, and they will recount the wonderous times of joy you had together.  But I will find no joy in your passing.  For you made no attempt to be at peace with the God you have gone to meet.
