Historically Dead

How angry you were when your sons died in Vietnam.  What a great rebellion was set on fire as your sons and daughters rebelled against your strength.  And as your sons have died in subsequent conflict you cried great tears of grief.

Your precious desire was taken from you and no one asked permission.  They were stolen in the night and trained for war.  Many you have never seen again.  And many have returned to you less than they were when they left.

How does it feel to lose your greatest desire?  Is America greater for its loss?

How many bodies of desire does history hide; for no one is left to read it?  The parents of decades gone by, now laying their grave, their sorrow quieted.  You do not mourn for them for you have forgotten.  You do not learn from history, you rewrite it.

You have stolen the Lord’s desire.  With great joy, you have made for yourself your own gods.  And you worship them with great abandon.

“To profit!  To profit!  Let us aspire to ease!  Let us put the horror of history behind us!  We will gather to ourselves great riches, and this for free!”

All the while the Gospel of Christ Jesus, the Holy One of the Most High God, languishes as it goes forgotten in your streets and houses.  You have stolen the desire of God to save your souls.

By your sparkling rebellion you have turned your face away from he who shed his very blood that you may know his love and live.  You have counted him as worthless as the sons who died before you were born.

As you paint the crosses of the historically dead, so that is the extent of your worship.  Off to spend and gain for your own selfish pride, you have no time for what is holy and good.

What possible benefit might you expect to receive from the one who made you and gave his life for you?  Do you think he will remain patient and silent?  Do you think you will not be noticed as you gorge yourself with things you have stolen from his excellent mercy?

Lessons From History

For the sake of all events among men:

Through out history, evil has prospered wherever the godly sought peace by remaining silent.  The fear of punishment looms hard on everyone.  But as the prospects appeared inevitable they spoke up.

One by one they were singled out of the masses.  Soon, in every account, the people of the world revolted at their own plight.  This has been true for every century.  How is it that people today do not take that into consideration?  How was it that the people of former generations didn’t take that into consideration when it was their turn.  The moment is not yet ripe.

I will not be silent.  Not because what I have to say is so holy or important, but because I desire to be counted with those who made that same choice.  I can testify that as a man speaks up against evil the assault begins.  I can surmise that the assault only lessens when the lips go still.

Regardless, all glory belongs to the One who has purchased Righteousness with His own blood.  History will record as it will record.  The moment is far too precious to ignore.

By His Grace.

Sure, You Can! For Now.

“I can, so I will.”

This is said of the majority of mankind.  They perceive an advantage is to be gained by stretching the laws of the land.  They don’t notice that they’ve already determined to stretch the laws of God.  So what does it matter if they push past the limits of man’s laws?

“I must, so I should.”

This is said by a handful of people who are striving with all their might to learn to love God and all His ways.  They subject themselves to the laws of God.  So it matters a great deal when it comes to obedience to the laws of man.

“And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”  (Joshua 24:15)

Two older men walked down the street after enjoying an evening meal.  They had talked about all the amazing things they had done when they were young.  Both had been soldiers.  And each had his fair share of hand to hand combat in the war.  As they walked they talked about the marvel of old age.  “It’s good to have been able to take part in that war”, one said.  “We sure showed them!”  The other one replied.  20 seconds later they both lay on the pavement.  Four young men had pulled them into an alley, beat them unconscious, and robbed them.

All their previous valor gone, they lay in their own blood.  And those who could testify to every blow were running away laughing.  The former days were gone.  Now the victory lay in the hands of heartless fools.

This nation has had its good meals like that.  And now we’re walking down the dark street, as we create the new history, happily enjoying each other’s company.  Think about it.

I have seen who I am.

I hated the report.

A hermit, a recluse, an abomination to man.

Each man is the product of his own history.

Yet each day dawns anew.

Since I am what I am,

Lord, what can I do for you?

History (Australian television channel)

I have some time this morning to sit and relax a bit.  What, I wonder, should I do with this time?  I could watch TV.  Perhaps there’s a channel of learning.  Yea!  History channel…… That would be interesting.  Then I reflect on who makes the History Channel.  Well, perhaps I could find something better to do with my time.

This outcome of reflection has brought something to the surface in me.  I spent years, more like decades, learning about the world around me.  And I find something very curious, I’m not interested anymore in the things of this world.  A special lack of interest flares up at learning from those who do not openly announce the Son of God in their work.  I’m sick of allowing myself to become interested as a program unveils it’s information, only to find them preaching that I came from a monkey.

Perhaps I could watch that show, “How it’s made”.  But that becomes rather common place in a very short while.  Not that I don’t enjoy looking and learning about innovation.  Man’s ability to turn rock into some shiny and useful tool has always captivated me.  But what part of me is captivated.  That’s the question.  And I know the answer.  I could watch “Myth Busters”.  But everything of man is, in the end, a myth.  So what can they tell me that I don’t already know.

I think I’d rather sit in silence a while and consider the Lord and His ways with man and myself.  At least in this I accomplish something eternal.  Any other contemplation only leads to corruption of the eternal.

I was thinking of how the Tower of Babel went unfinished.  God looked down on the work of man and decided that He would rather they remain as they were until Jesus had appeared among us.  And I consider that since the Lord appeared in flesh, man has became rather adept at turning his world into a more sensual place.  Now that thought would be incomplete if I didn’t allow myself to consider the current explosion of sensuality.  By sensuality I mean the fulfilment of every possible lust man owns; from building houses which have become far more than a shelter from the elements to every possible convience.

It was not God’s desire that man should fend for himself like this.  If he had obeyed the Lord from the beginning, I’m convinced that the elements of this world would have become far more man friendly.  God desires to care for His creation.  But it is man’s continual rebellious ways that have resulted in a quite complex war with the world around him.

In the end of this thought comes something worth thinking about.  If it was God’s desire to provide for man from the beginning, why would His desire be any different now?  Even though I am part of this carnival of the works of man’s hands, I can still make a choice to trust the Lord to provide for me.  And why does He provide like this for a people who will certainly die in a couple years?  What benefit is there in this providing?

FAITH!

By His Grace.
