ATM’s, Modern Idols

I know I’m not a good writer.  And if I can’t write well about simple things, how can I possibly expect to write well about the best of things.  But I’ve given this a reasonable shot (as meager as my tiny mind seems to be).   I can only hope that the reader will think it through for himself.

Yes, that was an apology.  Have mercy on yourself.  I’m just a gate.  Walk through me and see if what I write about is true.  If it’s not, you’ve wasted no time at all.  You would’ve spent that time investigating something else that’s just as fruitless.  But what if I write about the best of possible worlds? Then if you don’t investigate, you’ve lost absolutely everything.

_____________

Standing in front of an ATM, asking it to have mercy, then expecting it to pump out $400 for you, is rather ridiculous. You’re going to walk away confused and broke.

There are people who have figured it out: Read the directions. Get a job. Start an account. Deposit your money. Ask the bank for a debit card. Then ask how to use the ATM.   Relatively simple.  I’m sure the bank is eager to help you.

Isn’t false religion and superstition just that ridiculous, when the Lord’s people are so eager to help anyone learn. Not to mention that the Bible is so easy to understand. The Gospel is preached in every corner of the world. And the Lord Jesus himself promises to guide his people into understanding and profitability.

But don’t be like those people who read the directions on the ATM alone. If you simply stand in front of the bank, you still can’t get what you want. Success requires continual and faithful work,  a face-to-face encounter, and a live agreement.

Most people think they will wait to the last minute. Somehow they believe all their sins will be forgiven and they will become glorious creatures. How misguided and sad. There’s a life to be led. There are gifts from God to receive. There is glory to be generated for the Lord of Mercy.

“Without me you can do nothing.”

The Lord may very well have mercy on deathbed confessions, or awareness instilled by imminent death. But think about all the days that are lost in worthlessness forever. Selfishness may gain you what you want. But it gains the Lord nothing. If your life is not fruitful for God, you have nothing, and are nothing.

“Many are called but few are chosen.”

The Challenge of Complexities

You know the language of Man in all its various translations; superstition,  fiction, history, sports, entertainment, finance, politics, social etiquette, music, slang, death, pleasure, elegance, and a million more subdivisions.  Why do you not know the language of God?

We will pass away.   This earth will pass away.  Superstition,  fiction, history, sports, entertainment, finance, politics, social etiquette, music, slang, death, pleasure, elegance, and a million more subdivisions will all pass away.  How is it that you do not know the language of eternity?

Eggs for Every Meal!

He got the morning paper and shuffled to the table.  Eggs again.  It’s always eggs.  How come I can’t have something interesting for breakfast?  I don’t mind eggs.  They are a marvelous food.  But do they need to be for breakfast every day?  Why can’t we have them for dinner instead?  Yeah!  We could have steak and potatoes for breakfast and leave the eggs for dinner.  Or how about a nice chef salad, dripping with sauce, for breakfast.  Yeah!  Now that would be more like it!

Well, why not?  What is it with tradition regarding food anyway?  Who said the egg was to be exclusively reserved for our first meal of any day?  Tradition, smadrition,  I want pizza for breakfast.  Oh….  I’ve often done that.  Wow, does that make me a non-conformist?

Who gets the distinct privilege of laying down traditions?  Why, it’s those folk we allow to be “in charge”.  And why did we let them be “in charge”?  Because we were to lazy to make up our own minds about what we should do.  We thought, “Hey, I can’t figure what to eat for breakfast.  I’m too sleepy to think.  Guess I’ll ask Bob what he’s eating for breakfast.  Hey!  Bob, what ya havin for breakfast?”  Bob yells back from across the street, “Salmon tails.  How about you?”  And like a drunk, the answer comes back slurred with sleep, “Salmon tails”.  With that he shuffles back in to ransack the fridge for something different.

Tradition is a potential hell in it’s self.  We embrace mindless tasks with full assurance that we are doing what’s right because everyone else says it’s right.  Now, to be fair, some traditions are full of good.  But others are full of good-for-nothing.   Which is which?  And are you really ready to tear your world apart to find out?

Since this blog is dedicated to God’s Glory, I am compelled (joyfully) to bring this subject full circle to the Father of Lights.  Tradition can be deadly when it comes to the Holiness of God and His expectations for His people.  But few are prepared to empty their bag of traditions to determine if they are holding on to lies and superstitions.  Regardless, God demands that we live in truth.  Keep what you want, it’s not mine to judge you.  But if you’re wise, you’ll take time to consider what traditions and superstitions you hold dear.  What isn’t Jesus won’t stand the consuming fire of eternity.

By His Grace.
