Why Lose?

If you think God is a series of do’s and don’ts, you don’t know him.  If you think obeying the Ten Commandments will make you a friend of God, you don’t know the gospel.  If you believe all the social hype about religion, you are blinded by a lie.

Rather than explain those three statements, I’ll just ask you to read the New Testament.  If you’re still confused, read it again.  And if you still don’t get it, read it one more time.

The point is confusion isn’t necessary.  Keep reading it until you understand.  Because if you don’t understand, you’ll die.

By His Grace

Holy Squalor

It is no shame for a man to live in the squalor of this world.  Let bugs and dust cover what he owns, it does not decrease his value.  Poverty is, and it takes its toll upon the prosperity of men.

But if a man is ashamed of the Living God and His holy Christ, what squalor surrounds him?  Though he lives in the greatest of splendor here, he is eternally impoverished, and filled to overflowing with shame.  Though he is forced to live as less, while he is here, the one who is ashamed of God while he lives in the shame of this world is impoverished for eternity.

Every man has the possessions he has.  And he has according to the place he has been assigned.  Yet how few reach to the things of promise.  How many accept their position of shame and think highly of themselves?

To this very day shame is harvested in abundance!   Where, among our things, is the prosperity of God?  Where is the strength that gives life?

There are holy kings who live among the bugs and dirt.  There are holy kings who live in rich abundance here.  These will not be ashamed as they stand before the Most High, for they have not been ashamed of him while they lived among their things.

Wanna Be a George?

George was summoned into the office.  Was this to be his last day?  Was poverty about to become his best friend?  A cloud of anxiety formed within him as each step took him closer.  Yet he did not know what to expect.

His boss was a fair man.  He knew that whatever would come must be fairly given.  In his anxiety he thought, “Surely I’ve missed something necessary.  Surely he will drive me out for something I have done but did not realize.”

He knocked.  “Come in George”, the steady and highly intelligent voice said.  George made his way across the spacious carpeted office.  The leather chair gladly received his anxious frame.

“George, I’ve watched you closely; closer than you know.”  A chill went up George’s spine.  “I’ve seen things about you and your life that I know you thought were hidden.  I’m about to change your life sir.”

How should George’s lips freeze shut now?  What defense could he make to such an obscure remark?  “Yep, I’m about to go home to give seriously bad news.”

“George, I know how your family struggles.  I see how tattered your clothing is.  And I know it has to do with things you can’t control.  Money’s tight.  And life demands too much, rather often.”

George just nodded his head on an unstable neck.  Without asking, his eyes began to drop their gaze to the floor.

“George, I want to give you the rest of the day off.”  George’s eyes shot up to look intently into the eyes of the man who held such horrible things in his hand.

“I want you to go down to ‘Fair Deal Motors’.  When you get there, I want you to pick out a car that meets your fancy.  Have David call me, and I’ll pay for it.”

George just stared.

“George, did you hear me?”  A tiny nod was the response.

“Well, away with you then!  Get on your way.  I’ll see you in the morning.”

That was it.  That was the extent of the meeting.  After thanking his boss, George was numb as he walked to “Fair Deal Motors”.

When he got to the lot, he asked for David.  David came out with a giant smile pasted on his mouth.  “You’re a very lucky man George!  Come on.  Let’s go out and get your new car picked out.”

It was true!  Now his face brightened.  Shiny colors of shaped steel filled eyes that, just a moment before, had only been able to see gloomy mist.

He walked through the lot.  He saw the luxury.  But he passed it by.  He knew what fit his desire.  And find it, he did.

“Are you sure George?”  Asked David with a twinge of surprise he couldn’t hide.  “Absolutely!  George’s smile said it all.

They went to the office.  Paper work was done.  Keys were given.  And handshake was made.  “Off ya go, friend!  Have a great day!  I’ll call your boss and finalize the deal.”

George drove off in his “new” car.

The next day, he went to his boss’s office first thing.  He had in mind to thank him and summon all the gratitude he could muster.  His wife and children had been ecstatic.  The evening was filled with waxing and admiration of both the gift and the giver.  He came in to give all the thanks such an evening deserved.

His boss was glad to see the joy.  But as they sat together, a frown came on the boss’s face.

“George, I am really confused.  With all the beautiful and dependable cars David has there, why did you choose that rust bucket?  You could have had that Lincoln.  It’s only two years old!  It would have lasted you for years.  As it is, I’m not sure how long that can of bolts will skip down the road.  Maybe David didn’t explain clearly enough.  Maybe you just didn’t understand.  But a deal’s a deal.  That’s the car you’ve got.”

Surprise lit up George’s mind.  He hadn’t thought the receiving had no limit.  He had missed the point of the gift entirely.  But a deal’s a deal.  “I chose what I thought I deserved, Sir.”

“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”  Yet how many choose only what they think they are worth?  What a horrible waste of faith.

The Place of No Return

I write this as help to my brothers and sisters in Christ.  I write this as instruction to the wicked that they may understand.  I write this as admonition and hope.  If you will bear with it, there will be understanding.

A man wakes and guilt covers him.  Perhaps as he closed his eyes the guilt restrained his sleep until his flesh could fight no more.  He is aware of the holiness of God.  He is aware of his own utter lack.  This awareness has crushed multitudes, and they never rise again.

Many arrive to this place of understanding.  They perceive the nature of “good”.   They also perceive the nature of their own wickedness.  This perception can be a wall of steel brick 7000 miles high.  Here, millions have died for lack of faith.

What does a man do, before the perfect face of God, when he finds he is guilty of sin?  What repairs can be made? What action can be taken?

We are forced to consider the righteousness of God.  Regardless our sin, he is faithful and true.  His Son did not bleed for no reason.  Therefore if we believe that, what we must do becomes clear.

We approach God in prayer confessing our sins.  He responds by freeing our conscience.  Now we must rise and start the war again.  Not to believe, is to call God a liar.  Not to believe this to say: “Christ died for nothing”.  We cannot do that.   Such a saying is worse than our sin.

How useless is it to beat yourself for the things you have done?  There is a mountain to climb.  Wallowing in your pityful state does no good.  It brings no glory to Christ.  And it does not fulfill the Word of God.  Not to mention the devastating blow to our testimony.  We teach, by necessity, what we believe.

I understand how difficult it is to let go and just run.  But if we believe God, what choice is there?  He takes no pleasure in our sin.  But it is his pleasure to see us have faith and go.

Again, the proof of his desire is in the death of his Son.  He encountered death for the will of God.  The will of God reaches to reunite what is broken.  And that he has accomplished through His Holy Son.

“The Faith” does not wallow in disrepair.   It stands as quickly as legs can find balance, and strives toward obedience.  Faith that comes through any other means than the Holy Blood of Christ is no strength of faith at all.  But understanding and strength come when we believe the Holy Word of God regarding the sacrifice of his Son.

Have you been wallowing in your frailty for years?  Isn’t it about time to believe?
