The Engine

On his 12th birthday a boy looked for his Dad’s present at the table.  He sorted them all and found none.  His mind couldn’t believe that Dad would forget him.  So he began to open all the presents.  The party ended with joy for all who were there.  But the nagging thought was, “Where’s my present from Dad?”

As all the guests left, no one seemed to notice the absence of Dad’s gift.  And the boy watched as Dad walked over to his favorite chair and sat down.  Dad reached for a book and started to read.  Knowing that Dad loved him, the boy walked over to his hero and asked, “Have I done something wrong?”  Dad looked up with a smile and said, “No, of course not.  I love you and think you’re an awesome kid”.

Dad instructed his son to sit down next to him.  After the boy had sat down Dad handed him the book.  “Engines for Dummies” was the title.  Needless to say, the boy was confused.  But Dad patted him on the shoulder and got up.  “Come on, I got something for you”.  They both walked out to the garage.  There on a stand was a V8 engine.  Filthy, was the only word that came to the boy’s mind.  But right beside the engine was a gleaming red tool box.  “This is your project”, Dad whispered to his son.  The boy just looked up at him with a blank stare.  “What am I gonna do with this?”, the boy asked with a slight quiver in his voice.  “You’re going to rebuild it”, replied Dad.  “Let’s get started”.  Open the middle drawer of the tool box and get the brush.  The boy was dazed by the “gift”, but he obeyed.  After about an hour of spraying, scrubbing, wiping, and sweat, the engine looked a whole lot better.  But the confusion wasn’t gone.

8 weeks later the engine sat gleaming brighter than the tool box.  The boy had learned everything he ever needed to know about how to rebuild a V8 engine.  The boy’s obedience and love for his Dad was met, during those 8 weeks, by a surprising amount of knowledge, patience, and tenderness from his Dad.  Dad stood and stared at the wonderful transformation and smiled.  The boy was proud of his accomplishment.  Yet he knew he wouldn’t have even thought of starting the project.  Everything had been done together.  And the boy knew that he had only been Dad’s hands.

“It’s beautiful”, Dad said.  “Oh Yea!”,  was the reply.  The boy wondered what they were going to do with it next.  He was only 12.  What was he going to do with a V8 engine?  Dad brough out the camera and snapped a ton of pictures.  Some engine, some boy, some together faces in front of the engine, snap snap snap.  After a brief celebration the boy asked, “What are we gonna do with it Dad?”  Dad’s answer was a bit hard to take at first.  “We’re going to give it to that family with the broke down station wagon down the street.  They don’t have a car that runs.  And we’ll help them put it in.”

Both joy and sadness filled the boy as he pondered those words.  All that work.  All that sweat.  All that………..  “Sounds great Dad”, was the boy’s words.  They didn’t reflect what he was thinking.  But he knew it was a good thing to do.  Four days later the engine was pulling a family around where ever they wanted to go.

What’s the purpose of this story?  When God works a work in you, do you really think it’s for you?  And when it’s completed, do you really think you did it all yourself?  And when God tells you to give all glory to Him, do you think He’s joking?  And when He tells you to give it away as though you never had a part in that work, what will be your response?  All Glory will belong to the Father through Jesus His Son.

Way Too Much Information.

In days past there was no mass media.  A man lived and prayed according to the knowledge he had.  He helped who came his way and did what he could in his own little corner of life.  It is not the same today in regard to media and knowledge.  But man has not changed.

While we listen to the media and hear from our friends of a massive turmoil in this world, let’s remember something.  One way to win over an opponent is to swamp him with so much to defend that he cannot focus on the singular attack which will pronounce him defeated.  You are no different than cain or able (or any other man), in that you are a singular human.  We war with what we have, not what we are yelled at to respond to.

Focus your attention on those things which you can effect in a positive manner.  dispel the call for praying and giving for every worthy need.  Though God is able to grant us far more than we can even imagine, we are still warriors placed on a certain plot of ground.  Do not let this world confuse you with the myriad of requests you now hear.  Keep your focus on Jesus and do what He gives you to do.  He knows we are limited.  Keep your hope fresh and do not waver in your faith.  Isn’t our faith the object the enemy is trying to defeat?

Each New Day

Embracing a new day means opportunity.  We have a chance to think a million thoughts.  We have the chance to do thousands of things.  We get to experience this “place of testing” once again.  And we are allowed one more moment to look hard for the God who created us.

Embracing the end of our new day means we have opportunity.  We have a chance to look back at the important thoughts we had.  We have the result of thousands of things we did.  We sum up our experience in this “Place of Testing”.  And we are allowed to look back over our shoulder to see if the God who made us was located by us.

These days will end.  We all die.  And we have the promise, by He who cannot lie, that Jesus will return to gather His people to Himself.  I tell you a truth.  There will be a day of deep regret for most.  They did not consider Jesus worthy of their million thoughts.  They did not do the things God demands of all men.  Their experience of this “Place of Testing” was numbed by materialism, pride, drugs, and all manner of pleasure seeking.  And they will find the God who made them without preparation for that monumental Appearance.

If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?  It’s your day.  Do as you please.  But there is One who owns every day.  And you are treading on His turf.  Consider with a sober mind.

The Closing Net

As we see events closing in on the world, which are forcing them into the valley of decision, we also see people living their lives as though nothing were happening.  I’m amazed to watch this happening as God foretold.  He said that He would send all manner of difficulties upon man that they would have a chance to turn to Him.  But He said that they would never forsake the work of their hands.  God is absolutely true, wise, eternal, Holy, and able to direct the paths of men into His will.

Where do you stand in relation to God?  If you’ve accepted His salvation in Christ Jesus and are actively listening to be willingly led by God’s will, then good.  But if you’re ignoring the signs of this age, you’re in for a horrible surprise shortly.  Can’t you feel the net close in around you?  haven’t you heard of the horrors abroad?  Don’t you see the rulers gather together to plot their own kingdoms?  Why doesn’t the rising cost of living cause you alarm?  And this is just the beginning.

You have heard people warn of the end of the world.  And you’ve heard others laugh at such talk.  And yet you do nothing regarding your relationship to the One who made you.  Your only concern is that you survive.  How long will you be able to survive?  And what does survival in the body you now inhabit mean?  That you get to live a few more minutes than the majority of those who will appear at the throne of God with you?

Look around.  It’s here.  The end is quickly becoming apparent.

The Place of Shadows.

He prepares a table for His people in the midst of their enemies.

What we are and what we have belongs to Jesus.  This is not eternity, though we float under His gaze.  This is the place of shadows.  What we see, hear, taste, feel, and think are but shadows of what is True.  There is a place of Truth.  And to that place we all will enter.  Right now we live in a place of testing.  Do you love God and His things?  Or are you taken in by all the shadows.  Do you love the world more than you love God?  If so, you will be horribly disappointed when you appear before Him.

Repent of all things ungodly and seek His lovely face while you live in this place of shadows.  If you wait till death it will be too late to prove your allegiance.

What and Who Am I?

I am a Christian. That is to mean I am one who accepts the gift of God in the forgiveness of Christ Jesus’ sacrifice. And, there is within me, a willingness to forsake everything the world holds dear for the glory of God the Father through Jesus’ work in me.

I am a fool being transformed by the Lord of Life. He set me free of many sins which would otherwise have sent me to certain death come the day of Judgment. And what remains; the accusations of sins past, present, and future will be forgiven by the Father because of Jesus.

What I have is His. What He promises is mine, for He cannot lie.
